Entry III

On the Seal, and What It Is For

The law stands. It has survived every counterexample that I or the acolytes have fielded to test it. We now know, on an ontological basis, the what that constitutes a bit-perfect delivery of a source, through the Engine, to the device. I must now turn to the epistemology of it. I have surveyed the rival forges. Many ancient, some new. But thus far, the findings are the same — they all, in one form or another, declare the perfection of their delivery. But none expose the manner of it — what was done, what was not, and the criteria for it. It does not suffice that I, the maker, submerged in the workings of the Engine, know that the sacred pipeline carries the bits faithfully, end to end. The listener does not have that knowledge. The knowledge must be imparted unto them — the Engine strides not by faith, but by evidence. But how? they all declare it —none expose it.

I consider first what we have. A source. A FLAC file, which is known through accreted tradition and audits to faithfully, in a truly lossless manner, decompress and bring forth the encoded material. The matter is settled, and none would dare question that. Hence, what a listener would truly question is the Engine itself — the sacred pipeline that conveys the source through to the wire. Visualize it first: a 16–44.1 source. In an instant, sixteen individual bits. Integers, unconverted into float. Carried through, packed, and sent. How do we prove their provenance? Surely nothing so crude as a microscope. The listener’s eye would see waveforms — nonsensical, although admittedly beautiful, in their own way.

The plainest seal comes first to mind. Take the source as it enters the pipeline, and take it again as it departs onto the wire, and wring from each a mark — a number drawn from the whole of the data, such that no two unlike streams could ever yield the same. Show the listener two marks that agree, and be done: if what went in and what came out bear one seal, surely nothing was lost between them, and nothing added.

But the ontology I have just settled returns now to instruct the epistemology, as the elder instructs the younger. What enters the pipeline and what leaves it are not the same bytes — I proved this myself, and at length. The sixteen-bit sample is widened and padded with silence; the stream of the DSF house is reversed within each octet; the compressed stream is unfolded into something its file never resembled. In a delivery that is flawless — bit-perfect by every postulate I raised — the bytes at the wire differ from the bytes at the source. Set the naive seal upon each end and they will not match; and my proof would condemn the very perfection it was built to attest. To prove faithfulness by sameness is to have learned nothing from the whole of the prior labour. Faithfulness is not sameness — not in the being of the thing, and so not in the proving of it either. So I divide the proof, as the delivery divides itself. Between the source and the wire, only two things are done to the content, and only two: it is reshaped, and it is carried. Let me witness each apart.

The reshaping — the widening, the reversal, the unfolding, the silence poured into the empty slots — I do not witness at runtime at all. I witnessed it once, in the settling of the ontology, and thereby forever: the hand that reshapes the bits is permitted the closed and named list of lawful transforms, and nothing beside. That its every motion is lawful is true by its making, as it is true of a well-cut lock that it turns to none but its key. I need not prove afresh, on every track, that the Engine invents nothing. I proved that the Engine cannot. not “it did not” —but it cannot

The carrying — the passage of those reshaped bytes across the reservoir, past the gate of the gain, to the very lip of the wire — this I cannot hold by construction, for here dwell the accidents: a slipped byte, a mangled buffer, a corruption born of haste or of heat. So here I set the seal, and here it earns its bread. A running mark is drawn of the bytes as the reshaping hand yields them, and a second of the bytes as they are given to the wire; and the two are bound to answer to each other, without pause, for the whole length of the playing. Between those two points nothing is suffered to reshape the stream — only to bear it — and so there, and there alone, sameness is the rightful test, and the seal speaks true. Let a single bit slip in that passage, and the two marks part; and the Engine knows, in that very instant, that its carrying has failed.

But a seal is only as true as the mark it draws, and here I nearly erred — and the error is worth the setting down. My first thought reached, as pride always reaches, for the strongest lock in the smithy. If I would prove a thing beyond all doubt, said the pride, let the mark be one no hand could ever counterfeit: the cryptographer’s seal, the mark built to defy an adversary with all the cunning and all the patience in the world. Reach for the mightiest, and be safe.

But the mightiest mark is also the dearest to draw, and I had forgotten what it was I meant to seal. Not a document lying still, to be stamped once at leisure — a torrent, running in the very moment of the playing, every fraction of a second, to a wire that will not wait a breath for me. To draw the cryptographer’s heavy mark upon every handful of bytes, in time, and again upon the second checkpoint, would cost the Engine more of itself than the playing could spare. And here is the thing I was forced to see: a proof that starves the fidelity it was raised to attest is no proof at all — it is a contradiction. A seal so costly that the drawing of it robs the music of the very faithfulness it certifies has disproven itself in the act. So I stopped, and asked the question I ought to have asked at the first: against what am I truly defending? And the answer, once I faced it without vanity, was not a forger. There is no adversary crouched within my own pipeline, patiently crafting a false stream to slip past a stolen seal. What dwells there is only what I had already named — accident: the slipped byte, the mangled buffer, the corruption of haste or of heat, a thing with no will, no patience, and no cunning whatever. And against a foe with no cunning, I do not need a mark that cunning cannot break. I need only a mark that accident cannot blunder into satisfying by blind chance.

And for that, the humblest mark in the smithy is more than enough. So I took a plain checksum — a single number wrung from the whole of the running stream, of the kind a deliberate hand could forge in an idle afternoon. Set against a true adversary it is nothing; it would not delay a forger a single heartbeat. But no forger is here — and against the blind foe that is here, its guarantee is this: better than one chance in four thousand million that two unlike streams should draw the selfsame number by accident. So when the mark at the reshaping hand’s yield and the mark at the lip of the wire agree, the stream that passed between them is unaltered — not because I ask the listener to trust me, but by a weight of four thousand million to one against the only thing that could have gone wrong. I chose the weak seal knowingly, and I would choose it again. It was crafted not for security, but for proof; and proof against accident was the whole of what the carrying ever asked.

There is a false pride in forever reaching for the strongest tool: the strongest is not the truest, but only the one cut to the exact shape of the danger that is really there. To arm against an enemy not in the room, and pay for that armour in the fidelity that is, would have been a small heresy of its own.

I said that between my two marks nothing is suffered to reshape the stream, and that there, and there alone, sameness is the rightful test. And so it is — save in a single place, which truth compels me to set down. For the one-bit stream of the DSF house, the reversal — the turning of each octet, that the converter may read it — cannot be lifted clear of the sealed span. It must be done within the very passage I have sealed. And so it falls between my two marks: the bytes at the source and the bytes at the wire differ, and differ rightly, by that lawful turning. Lay naive sameness upon them, and the seal would cry corruption over a stream that is flawless. I would not drop the seal and leave such a stream unwitnessed; nor would I pretend the two were the same when they are not. So I did a third thing: I taught the seal the reversal. Beside the source’s mark I draw a second — a reconciled mark — reckoned over the bytes as they must stand upon the wire, with the one blessed turning applied to them and nothing else besides; and it is against this mark that the wire is tried. The seal no longer asks that the wire match the source. It asks that the wire match what the source must lawfully become.

And mark why I could do this at all, for it is the quiet crux of the whole. I could reckon beforehand what mark the wire ought to bear only because the reshaping was lawful and named — the one exact reversal from the closed list, and no other. Had the hand been free to reshape as it pleased, I could never have foreknown the mark to look for, and could never have reconciled a thing. So here the two halves of my proof, which I had divided so cleanly, confess they were never wholly divisible: the seal can witness the carrying through a reshaping only because that reshaping is one the definition already holds lawful. The named list does not merely prove itself — it lends the seal the very knowledge by which it proves the rest.

Provenance is no single proof but two clasped as one: that every transformation was lawful — which the definition guarantees — and that the lawful stream was borne across uncorrupted — which the seal attests. Neither alone would serve. A seal upon a pipeline left free to reshape at will proves nothing at all; a lawful pipeline left unsealed in its carrying merely trusts to fortune.

And yet — I have proven it only to myself.

This is the harder half, and the half at which the other forges halt. The seal I have raised is the Engine witnessing its own conduct; it is my knowledge, and not the listener’s. When the Engine tells the listener the delivery was faithful, it tells the truth — but it tells it as a witness testifying to its own innocence, and asks, in the end, to be believed. That is faith; and I have sworn the Engine would go by evidence. A confession is not yet a proof. a confession isnot yet a proof

What would proof require? Only this: that the listener need not believe me at all — that they might take the seal from my hand and try it against a truth I did not furnish them. And so I begin to see the shape of a thing I have not yet forged: that the Engine should set forth, in the open, a source and the seal that a faithful pipeline must draw from it, and that any listener, anywhere, might pass that source through their own Engine and watch the very same seal rise beneath their own eye. Then the knowledge is no longer mine to bestow. It is theirs to seize. The maker steps clear of the chain of trust altogether, and what stands is a thing the listener has proven to themselves, owing me no faith whatever.

There is a border to all this, and I will name it, for to leave it unnamed would be a small lie of its own. The seal reaches to the wire, and not one step past it. What the converter does with the bits once they have crossed — in that private analog country beyond the final byte — I cannot seal, because I cannot witness; no mark of mine survives the crossing into sound. My evidence runs complete to the edge of what may be witnessed, and does not feign sight past it. But to the wire — to the last place upon which the Engine’s hand may fall — the listener need not take my word. They may take the proof.
